The major network news organizations as well as most local news groups have stopped reporting news and have started trying to create it. We've lost journalism and it has been replaced by the touchy-feeling garbage foisted on the American public as news.
It not only helps to dumb-down America, it helps kill emotion, intelligence and a desire to know what is happening in the world.
I long for a Walter Cronkite or a Dan Rather. Somebody who at least tries to tell a story like it really is. Somebody who is really interested in journalism.

ABC, NBC, CBS and MSNBC suck all day long and twice as hard on Sunday. I watch the local ABC or the local FOX channel for what is happening in my area and FOX News for the national stuff. The rest of it (except for Anderson Cooper) is crap.

Well Bob, they don't call them talking heads for nothing. Although, I always thought sound didn't travel in a vacuum (between the ears).

I honestly can't tell you the last time I watched one of the 3 "major" networks. I went to FOX when my son deployed to Iraq in 2003. I've never gone back to the main 3. Am I getting honest news coverage on FOX? Well, I think I am, but you are absolutely right, even FOX has a bunch of "has been" lawyers now trying to be journalists. I've never trusted lawyers. Now FOX is full of them. The upside of all of this is that the "has been" lawyers all seem to be "foxy" ladies who show a lot of cleavage and wear short skirts. Who cares about the news, the girls keep you coming back.
Oh, and by the way, I'm convinced that the Obama Administration is destroying America.
2, no 3 things I really miss.... Country Legends Music, Bob Lonsberry on KNRS, and my mind. I can't remember where I put it.

Hey, have you listened to X96 lately? They keep commenting on how you have this support group demanding you be picked back up in Utah. They keep joking that only three people show up at the protest march. Where are the rest of your sheep? Do they now see what an egotistical ass you are? Your comments are always so one-sided. I stopped listening the day you accused someone who disagreed with you of going through the process of getting a sex change. Remember? Rather than address the issue, you instead just made fun of his supposed high voice. Good riddance Bob, and tell that no-talent Lee...good bye... Another Democrat heard from.

I have pretty much given up on TV news. (When I watch I channel surf.) What I really like is listening to you, Bob, on the radio. You always tell the story behind the headline. You find the answers to what we are all wondering about on any given story. You are the best reporter since Paul Harvey. (or any of those "old timers") You amaze me that you know so much about history, too. I am almost twice your age, and yet you seem to grasp the aura of those the old times, as I remember them way back when, when you talk about historic times, esp WWII times. Thanks, and God Bless you and your family. Hope to hear you on radio again very soon. Just a fan, Sherry

So now you know how we feel here in Utah in your absence. Doug Left just doesn't cut it. Informative local news via radio has disappeared, and we're left with a vacuum. I prefer dead air and old 70s hits to KSL. And as a result, I really feel out of the loop, uninformed and unfulfilled.

I listen to FOX Cable, The only one that gives you the truth.

Old habits are almost impossible to break. Try Brett on Fox at 6pm. or forget about network news and piece it together from the net...Bloomberg Business, Drudge as a portal for AP Breaking, etc.
# 11. 7/13/10 5:57 AM by Andrew the fired up Democrat - Henrietta, NY
The content of the network "news" has long been mostly vacuous fluff. They have less than thirty minutes to cover all the important stories of the day and they waste most of it on non-news. I can't understand why the public needs to know about the latest inconclusive medical study and celebrity foibles. For the 6 / 7 pm news, I watch PBS. A good rule of thumb: the uglier the news anchor, the better the news content.
# 12. 7/13/10 6:11 AM by OldVietVet - Rochester, NY
Yea! I watch only the locals. The National Three Headed Monster is laughable. They run an identical lead story night after night. Limbaugh, on his daily radio show will sometimes splice togeather soundbites of this monkey-see-monkey-do routine. The big networks will not use objective news reporters or investigative journalists as their anchors. Those types wouldn't be inclined to present and spin fluff. And lets face it, the spinned up fluff has become the news. And that is a reflection of the contempt that the moguls have for their audience,as well as bad business decisions about pay and salary. Can anyone tell me just what Katy,Brian,or Diane do to earn their millions? Television has stuck itself with thousands of non productive "personality" types who suck millions of dollars from the seemingly bottomless coffers of the pinhead bosses.Be they "professional" athletes, late night Leno-type clowns, or news anchors.I hope I live long enough to see them all play for BBQ and a bus ticket out of town.

# 14. 7/13/10 6:22 AM by alexander - upstate ny usa
i haven't watch network news is years. i don't need it. i'm usually busy with kids at that time and i've never recorded the news, it never crossed my mind with all the available technology available to us.
there's this thing called the internet that covers my bases.
# 15. 7/13/10 6:22 AM by Liberty Tom - Rochester, NY
Bob - I'm surprised that you actually even TRY to watch the evening news. For me, that went during the Reagan Administration. Thank God for the internet - plenty of actual news, so while the rest of the world is enthralled with Lebron, YOU know what's actually going on in the rest of the world.
# 16. 7/13/10 6:30 AM
I like the Fox News Channel witn Bret Baier. The first half hour is news, the second half hour is commentary. I love Charles Krauthammer.
Watching network news is watching people perpetuate a fraud that is harming the country.

Excellent article, Bob. Spot-on on every point, and this coming from a moderate.
I was a journalism major in college, and one thing I will always remember was the reminder to stay objective. It wasn't even a reminder, it was pounded into our heads with a sledgehammer. And it mostly took.
Financial reporting has become a joke, as well. And financial reporting is probably the easiest to be objective on! CNBC is filled with morons. The market goes down 2% and it is the end of the world. It goes up 2% and the recession is over! Idiocy. Models just happy to be on TV. They'd be just as good on the Bachelorette, which is filled with moronitude.
# 18. 7/13/10 6:41 AM by George Step
I agree they should have left Diane on the morning show and giving the night to George. he might have a name that is hard to say or spell, but it's more credible to have the news coming from him. poor guy got the shaft.
yesterday morning 13 WHAM morning show showed some pictures of baby coyotes that Doug saw on his way in. Great, i loved it, in the morning. but at the 5 or 6pm news, that's just not news anymore, that's just silly. i love that they put his cell phone photos of the coyotes on in the MORNING...but class it up a notch or two for the evening. what they should have done was show the photo in the morning, and at night report "Doug went back out during the day, hunted down the coyote babies and shot them. here's a photo of his score! Thanks Doug!"

Primetime news, like major network programming in general, is superficial and boring. The "vast wasteland" of several decades ago was a delight compared to today's disastrous t.v.fare.
# 20. 7/13/10 7:00 AM by Lori - Ogden, UT
Sorry. Just can't watch the new like I used to. The giggles and never ending "stars" drifting on and off screen have me looking for something more intelligent to do. Like wash dishes and mop floors... I try to catch some news on the internet and weed out the truth from the fiction...
# 21. 7/13/10 7:02 AM by Jim Phalen - Rochester, NY
I am 54 years of age and grew up thinking that somehow reading the newspaper and watching the evening news was what decent, responsible citizens did. In the past ten years I too have questioned this almost basic principle of civics. Cable TV and the Internet has broken the link for good or bad. I also agree that George Stephanopoulos is among the best of those allowed to remain on the newstube. On the Sunday talk show (which he has sadly left) he always seemed to bring out the conversation and his guests in a smooth but honest way that like a good umpire in baseball wasn't terribly prominent. Most of the others seem like they basically want to show how smart they are (or buffed).
# 22. 7/13/10 7:15 AM
Government / Corporate controlled print & broadcast media are just purveyors of the propaganda their handlers want presented. It's the same stories across the board as if that's all there is happening in the world at any one time.
That's why it's dying and people are turning more and more to the internet for balance and bias control. But then there's Joe Lieberman trying to squeeze off the freedom & independence the internet offers. Thanks Connecticut.
Don't turn to gay marriage to solve your problem. Divorce Brian Williams as well and tune out... seek out independent media

Good morning Bob,
My husband and I couldn't agree with you more. They give her the soft focus with the cameras to hide all the wrinkles she has. i think she is more concerned with how she looks than in reporting the news without her vapid opinions. Who her husband is played a huge part in her getting the job in the first place,it seems it's not what you know but who you know that matters.

The on-site reporters _ARE_ a sad lot these days. Too many old-timers to remember, but a few good ones were Irving R. Levine and the brothers Marvin and Bernard Kalb.
Usually the TV just stays on ABC after Don Alhart and company.

When the nightly news started reporting on what Rush Limbaugh was saying that day, and on a fairly regular basis, I knew that the corporate hacks were pushing total BS as news.
Funny thing, Limbaugh was actually telling his audience to turn off the nightly news at 6:30 because it was wholly owned broadcasting by the liberal elites.
So why the hell would they keep mentioning Limbaugh on their shows--and not alwyas in a poor light?
# 30. 7/13/10 7:51 AM
The News Hour on PBS.

The most in-depth nightly news program on the air.

"News never changes much. It’s just the same things happening to different people.... I honestly do not believe that man was meant to know everything going on in the world, all at the same time."
~Richard Proenneke One Man’s Wilderness
This quote is so true and it's one of my all-time favorites.
I'm a bonafide current events junkie. So every few months or so, I take a brief, one or two week "fast" from the media. No FOX, No PBS, no Rush, no Drudge, no City newspaper,no DandC (save for the Sunday coupons),no blogs, newspapers,or Facebook, and most magazines. During this time I usually only allow myself weather reports and email.
In this down-time, I read books more and listen to music. It's actually a bit difficult for me to give the media up like this, but I always feel less anxious about things a few days into the "fast". And I'm also shocked at how quickly it takes me to get back up to speed on the important stuff. Because most of what we hear, see, or read really isn't that important. It's not "hard news",its just "gossip." "News" actually moves a lot slower than we are currently conditioned to think.
Of course, this temporary "ignorance is bliss" state can really backfire. My very first media fast was quite unsuccessful.
I had gotten backlogged with projects and decided that enough was enough, and started my first media fast at 6am that morning.
The morning of September 11th, 2001.
I didn't know A THING about what had happened that morning until 11:30.
# 36. 7/13/10 8:07 AM
Read the comments and of course there was the usual cadre of Fox News lovers telling us that they'd seen the light.
Please, Fox News is simply telling you what you want to hear, not what the news is.
Have you seen Fox News broadcast one word about the findings that the guy who filmed all those incriminating videos of ACORN employees had doctored the videos? But, when the videos first came out Fox reported on them continously 24/7 as blockbuster news.

Glenn Beck's history lessons??? Really???
Good Lord, open a book instead of accepting Glenn's version of "history".
Editor's Note: glenn's history is pretty good, actually. quotes are quotes, you can't argue against them.

Agreed. I haven't watched the 6:30 news in years (home from work by 6:30? Sounds nice...), but the clips of those newscasts, and the rest of the network feeds that I catch, reveal a sad story. Television news used to be more about news than television. Now it's a ratings game led not by journalistic instincts (and not by political partisanship either), but by focus groups, revenue projections and star power.

Agreed, quotes are quotes, but taken out of context they can be very misleading. But I won't argue the point.
My point is that it might be better to get your history from a bona fide historian rather than someone who calls himself a rodeo clown....
Editor's Note: i think the strength of glenn's focus on the founders is that it sparks people's interest in going out and learning more. i think the more any of us read about the founding and the founders' philosophies the better off we are.

Regarding our current state of affairs, both nationally and internationally.
The Bible refers to it as, "Strong Delusion."
I've heard it said many time that the first casualty in any war is always the TRUTH.
Tough thing for conservatives though is that a progressive's truth is always a moving target.

Try the BBC news on PBS at 11:00 pm. I learn more about international news and details of what is going on here than any of the US channels. I'm shocked at what is left out of the US news. I guess if it's not about Bragelina or other some such 'celebrity' it's not important.
Besides, I can't justify the cost of cable and since digital was forced on us (which is another story and gripe), my news outlets are limited.

A great book called "Spin Sisters" talks about the women in the liberal media, naming Diane Sawyer. I agree, George would be my pick for the news. I saw him in Thousand Oaks, California in a lecture series I went to and he was very analytical about his years with Clinton, honest and believable telling his story about the white house and why he cut his ties. I am a Republican but I have faith that George would report the news honorably.
